Igbo, and you name your kid something that tells your history and
hopefully predicts your future. So anyway, in grade school, because my
last name started with an A, I was the first in roll call, and nobody
ever knew how to pronounce it. So I went home and asked my mother if I
could be called Zoe. I remember she was cooking, and in her Nigerian
accent she said, “Why?” I said, “Nobody can pronounce it.” Without
missing a beat, she said, “If they can learn to say Tchaikovsky and
Michelangelo and Dostoyevsky, they can learn to say Uzoamaka.”
I’ve worked with many exchange programs on campuses, and they still “encourage” Chinese students to choose English names for their stay in the US. I’ve adopted a rule for myself, I won’t address them with their English name until they’ve told me to stop trying their real name on at least three different occasions. My family is largely immigrant, and while we’ve never had this problem, I don’t think anyone should have to change who they are when them find a new home, even a temporary one. So far, only two exchange student actually wanted to keep their English name, and one of them, Alice, had had Alice for a nickname since she was little.
Don’t know if it’s okay to add this here, but I used to work with a Chinese woman who had changed her name to Angelina for the sake of ease. When she first told me that was what she’d had to do, I asked her for her real name and if she minded me calling her that. She looked so frikkin happy, and it only took about two minutes for me to say it right. It’s not that people can’t pronounce these names, it’s that they won’t. It’s lazy and it’s rude.

The water crisis in Flint is getting worse and the media has pretty much stopped covering it. Not only that, it goes beyond Flint and into other areas of Michigan (like Detroit) (and even other states) as well. I found an article back when coverage of the water crisis was heavier that I wish I had bookmarked, because I can’t find it again. It showed a map of other areas in Michigan of varying degrees of also suffering from lead pipes.
A couple of years before the news broke of the Flint water crisis, my husband and I went to Michigan for a friend’s wedding. We stayed with my brother in law and his family in Milan. Our nephew had a rare form of melanoma not caused by sun exposure removed from his finger when he was 3. And my brother in law and sister in law proceeded to tell us of several other people in their neighborhood who had various forms of cancer and other illnesses. It got weirder when after showering at my brother in law’s house, my husband and I both had rashes are showering. The water had a strong smell and after shaving my legs they felt like they were on fire. On the way to my friend’s wedding, my husband asked me if I thought there was something strange about the water in their town and if all the illnesses among their neighbors and them were connected. I agreed the quality of the water was not good and it was really strange how we both felt after showering there. But my brother in law kinda waved our concerns away when we tried to bring it up.
Then about two years later the news broke about the Flint water crisis and that conversation came back to me. I really wish I could find that article again. I don’t feel the water in Michigan is safe period. The governor of Michigan needs to be held accountable for what he’s done. He had full knowledge of this. Also, the state of schools in areas like Detroit? Deplorable. Michigan’s government is terrible. Sad thing is, none of them will ever be had accountable for what they’ve done.
I’m really worried about this and I hope it doesn’t go to Grand Rapids cuz most of my extended family is there.

Let’s think about life in the Pokemon world for a minute…
First of all, there’s universal free healthcare across the planet. That’s more that a lot of places in our world can say. Moreover, fresh water on this world is apparently so nutrient-rich that it can cure moderate injuries, to say nothing of what berries can do. Therefore, the inhabitants of this world are probably very physically healthy, and those with disabilities (who by default cannot be “healthy”) don’t have to worry about losing their healthcare due to lack of money.
Politics-wise, there isn’t much of a government. Despite this, the world seems relatively peaceful. Private individuals, some as young as eleven, can be expected to deal with crime themselves. War has occurred in the past, but the general political sentiment appears to be very anti-war – cruelty is strongly frowned upon.
Economically, it’s true that there are some people with economic issues – like that one dude in Mauville Hills in ORAS – but generally there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of homelessness or poverty. Some people are more well-off than others – vastly so in some cases – but largely poverty doesn’t seem to exist.
Then there’s the wildlife.
Strange, supernatural creatures of unknown origin and great power populate this planet. An unarmed adult human is no match for even one of these creatures. But the vast majority of the wildlife is extremely friendly to the point where it’s almost all domesticated. Small children are given these creatures as companions and allowed to go out into the open world with them, as they will be safe and able to survive.
Even the scariest of these monsters can be tamed with love and care. Beedrill will love you if you toss yarn at it, sure. So will things like Gyarados, Hydreigon, and the Pokemon equivalent of Lucifer. No Pokemon is untameable so long as you are kind to it.
This in turn has fostered a culture of kindness. It is infinitely more rewarding to be kind to the living creatures around you. Those who are cruel are quickly steamrollered by those who build up close, loving bonds. Even then, a lot of people are concerned that this society of love and kindness is somehow too cruel (to the point where it was the entire plot of gen V).
That love and kindness is extended to all humans. People trust random strangers who walk into their homes. Items are randomly just given out on the street, often for no reward beyond a warm fuzzy feeling. Almost comical levels of generosity and acceptance are expected on this planet. And if you decide to betray that and take advantage of people…

Also, it’s worth pointing out that even if someone is disabled (and I’d argue that it’s kind of inaccurate to equate disability with a lack of health, but that’s a whole other thing) there is almost certainly a pokemon that can act as a disability aid.
Have trouble walking or balancing? There are pokemon you can lean on or ride. Have anxiety/PTSD/depression? There are pokemon who can help soothe your emotions and comfort you. Have sensory overload issues? Joint pain or tremors that make it hard for you to do things with your hands? There are pokemon that can help you.
Between the free healthcare, the culture of kindness and generosity, and the fact that you can have a service pokemon for pretty much ANY DISABILITY YOU CAN THINK OF… well, as a disabled person with chronic pain, I think most of my spoonie friends would agree that it’s basically the ideal place for people like us to live.

it is very common that white girl characters have love interests and finding love be the plot line and basis for all their stories and interactions.
It is uncommon for a girl character of color to be seen as a potential love interest, in need of defense by a male character and/or support from a male character full stop.
This is because of the history of social devaluation of woc and infantilization of white women.
Thusly:
it is subversive for white female characters to not have love interests for once and to focus on strength outside of male attention.
while at the same time
is it subversive for woc to be love interests and treated with care and reverence and with support in relationships on screen.
The “norms” for two groups of women are different based on the historical interaction both groups have had to suffer under patriarchal and sexist/racist media.
This is why its okay to feel hurt and roll your eyes when you see people screaming about how michonne from the walking dead “dont need no man” because she’s too “strong” to want to be desired and cared for, while at the same time feel hurt and roll your eyes when Black Widow is suddenly too helpless to get herself free from a basic ass cage and needs to be rescued by her randomly inserted love interest.
